Join us the weekend of September 18 & 19 as we head to Michigan for some R&R at Van Buren State Park. The park is about 2 ½ hours from Chicago, just south of South Haven.
We have reserved 5 campsites, which can only hold 20 people. Each campsite can have two tents. Once those 20 spots are filled, you’re out of luck. You can still come but you’ll have to make your own campsite reservation (it isn’t hard). JETAA Chicago will provide dinner Saturday night and breakfast Sunday morning. And yes, that includes S-mores.
Van Buren State Park is located on Lake Michigan, about 2 ½ hours east of Chicago, just south of South Haven. The park has about one mile of sandy beach and tall dunes along Lake Michigan shoreline. The campsite is located a short walk from the beach and has toilets & showers.
The plan is to arrive early in the afternoon on Saturday and hang out on the beach. Saturday night, we’ll cook dinner, roast some marsh mellows and tell scary stories around the campfire. After Sunday breakfast, we hit the beach or head over to South Haven for beers at Clementine. Late Sunday afternoon, we’ll head back to Chicago.
Cost for this trip is $10 per person. Campers will also be responsible be for the park entry fee of $6 per car. JETAA Chicago will cover the rest.
If you don’t have a car, don’t worry. Just let us know and we’ll hook you up with a ride. If you don’t have a tent or sleeping bag, check with REI. They rent gear and are located all over Chicago.
Questions, contact Rob Corder at 773-454-3817 or racorder@gmail.com.
